SunPower Solar Discovery Game
In 2011 SunPower and Ogilvy 360 Digital Influence set out to educate consumers about energy awareness and the process of going solar in a fun and meaningful way.
Matt’s group launched the ‘Solar Discovery Game’ – a first-of-its-kind educational Facebook trivia game. It gave contestants a chance to win the grand prize of a complete SunPower solar energy system and be entered to win more than 60 featured prizes, including plane tickets, video cameras, gift cards and event tickets from a long list of SunPower partners.
To motivate fans with an existing solar system, the grand prize winner could add the solar installation to an existing system or gift it to family, friends, a neighbor, or a local community building, such as a school or recreation center.
After liking SunPower on Facebook, contestants answered trivia questions to earn ‘panels’ (points) towards the grand prize. Players could also earn social collateral, or ‘badges’ along the way.
To encourage further solar education, fans were awarded additional points toward the grand prize for clicking a ‘Find Answer’ link within the game; it directed them to an educational source or article.
Select Campaign Results:
- Over 4,200 players representing all 50 US States and the District of Columbia
- Fans of the SunPower Facebook Page increased by 246% during the three-month game
- 8,305 game badges were awarded in the first month of the game
- Players spent on average almost 20 minutes in game per session; Facebook’s avg. time spent overall is 10
While Matt’s team expected to have many players under 24, they also had high levels of participation by players over 40. The winner – a 60+ year old woman from Orange County, California – correctly answered all 209 questions, including those in the final tie-breaker round. She chose to gift the SunPower solar installation (valued at $25,000) to her son.
